Pediatric Dentistry

Keep Your Child's Smile Healthy!

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children first see the dentist at one year old or when the first tooth emerges. It’s important to see a dentist early in a child’s life because it allows the doctor to examine his/her mouth and discuss specific oral hygiene instructions for the child.

Pediatric Dentistry in Valencia, CA

Pediatric dentistry is mostly concerned with preventative care. This means teaching your child about proper hygiene techniques so that oral health risks are minimized in the future. As a leading pediatric dentist in Valencia, CA, Dr. David Goldberg knows there are several stages to your child’s oral development:

  • From birth to 36 months
  • From 36 months to 11 years
  • From Ages 11 to 18

From Birth to 36 Months

Pediatric dentistry can actually begin as soon as your baby is born. Before teeth erupt, you can begin keeping the mouth clean with a warm, damp cloth after each feeding session. Once the first tooth erupts, usually around six months, a toothbrush can be introduced. You can begin scheduling regular checkups with Dr. Goldberg around age two, unless there are areas of concern prior to this timeframe. It is also recommended that you brush and floss your child’s teeth after eating or drinking.

From 36 Months to 11 Years

By age three, all of your child’s baby teeth will likely be present, making oral health extremely important. The permanent teeth start to make an appearance around age six, and your child will be in what is known as “mixed dentition” until all baby teeth exfoliate and permanent teeth erupt. In addition to regular checkups, parents should pay special attention to the following concerns:

Bruxism – This behavior usually emerges around the age of six. Prolonged teeth grinding or clenching can have lasting effects on the teeth and gums. If this behavior does not correct itself, treatment may be needed.

Brushing and Flossing – It is recommended that you supervise your child’s brushing and flossing habits to ensure thorough home care. A good rule of thumb is for them to brush first, and then you follow up until they develop the dexterity to be able to properly do it themselves.

Diet – Since pediatric dentistry is concerned with preventative care, we recommend limiting your child’s intake of sugary or acidic food and beverage items.

From 11 Years to 18 Years

During the teen years, your child will be exposed to many new oral health risks including sports drinks, injuries, tobacco, and piercings. As a leading provider of pediatric dentistry, Dr. Goldberg recommends talking with your child about the risks of these behaviors and having them wear mouth guards when playing sports.

A healthy early start to a lifelong of optimal dental health should begin at a very young age. To speak with a pediatric dentist in Valencia, CA, contact Dr. Goldberg and schedule a consultation today!
