What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are essentially tooth shaped caps that are placed over damaged teeth. By covering the entire visible portion of the tooth, it is possible to restore its natural size, shape, function, or strength. A crown may be recommended in the following situations:

  • If a tooth has been weakened by decay
  • If a tooth has been broken or worn down
  • To replace a large filling that is failing
  • If a tooth has been misshapen or discolored
  • To provide functionality and natural appearance to a dental implant

How are dental crowns placed?

Placing a dental crown involves four different steps. First, the tooth will need to be examined to determine if it is healthy enough to support a crown. Then, Dr. Goldberg will need to remove a small amount of tooth enamel to make sure the crown fits comfortably. Next, a mold of the tooth is made and used to create the custom crown. Finally, the crown is cemented in place.

How do same day dental crowns work?

Using state of the art imaging technology, it is now possible to create and place dental crowns in a single visit. First, a digital camera is used to take a picture of the tooth before sending it to the computer. Once in the computer, a three dimensional model of the tooth is created. Dr. Goldberg will then use this model to design the custom made crown. Next, this design is sent to the milling machine where a porcelain block is carved down to match the shape of the crown’s design. This step can take anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes. The crown can then be cemented in place.
